[ They had quickly set about a time to meet at Spellbound Stationary to see about setting up Forrest's lookbook and portfolio; his own was held underneath his own arm. He was dressed in a very streamlined dark purple pinstripe outfit with a shoulder mantle, wielding within his other hand was a black parasol held up over himself to keep the worst of the sunlight from burning his eyes though for precaution's sake, he also was wearing shades. Being a drow, he could never be too careful with the precautions he took against the sun.
He was always unfailingly 10 minutes early to anything, this was just because he had an overwhelming fear of being late and bore no relevance to the schedule of those he he was waiting on.
Perhaps a year a go, he would be impatient but the joys of having an oracle device to check while you waited, and it also did not help that his boyfriend was sending him pictures of their cats to pass the time, so he was occupied, though he would glance up as he saw Forrest approach and offer a very reserved but gracious smile. ]
[Forrest himself is nothing if not punctual; it would just be rude to do otherwise, especially after this person had gone so far out of their way to offer to assist him. He's dressed...well, in the way he usually is, looking every bit the proper lady as he approaches the shop, blond hair impeccably settled into long curls framing his face and his motions delicate and demure. He seems happy to be there, however, even if his approach is a bit cautious until he's greeted; his curtsy is deep and polished as he responds.]
Good morning; it's a great pleasure to meet you in person.
[ As Drow culture does not believe in gendered clothing, he finds the outfit quite lovely and pretty on Forrest, he inclines his head once Forrest approaches, the manners are impeccable and perhaps even worthy of that which he is used to in court. He does not dismiss the gesture but rather bows his own head in acknowledgement. ] It is my pleasure to meet you here and I look forward to assist you in making the best portfolio that suits your style.
[ And then toward the Stationary Shop ]
Shall we then, Forrest? [ He knows he is a bit formal, unfortunately that was his training; just by how he acted-- it was clear also that Essek did not do anything that he did not want to do in the first place ]
[That's quite fine; Forrest may not have been raised among royalty but he was raised among those who are used to caring for royalty. As such, the more formal demeanor is met comfortably enough, seeing as it's what he's used to being given; so it goes and all that, and he rises easily, folding his hands neatly in front of him.]
Yes, of course - I'm more than willing to learn from anything you might be willing to teach.
[ There is a part of Essek that defaults to formal however he does not want to build the expectation that it is needed and so when Forrest rises back up to his height, Essek makes a wave of his hand. ] You needn't be formal with me, this place defies this.. I think.
[ A flick of his wrist and the door to the Stationary Shoppe opens, a show of his magical powers but not because he is showing off but because he prefers to do things with magic if he can get away with it. ]
Now tell me, what is your favorite colours.. what are the types of clothing you find yourself most happy when you create them?
[ The best way to figure out the best type of portfolio was to get a feeling for the passion behind the art.. it worked with any passion, really. ]
[Forrest considers the question carefully as he makes his way inside; he certainly can understand the desire to do what one can magically if they're able to do it - he's waiting to get his own powers back for that reason.]
Well... I've found there to be a difference in the colors I like to work with, depending on the project. If it's something for me, I like working with pastels - I prefer pink, but I like seafoam greens and soft lavenders and baby blues just as much. If it's for others, I find that I tend to gravitate towards black, purple and gold - those are the colors associated with my country, and so I like to incorporate them if possible, because it tends to make those I usually make them for happy.
[He's still got his hands folded primly in front of him, but he can't altogether stop himself from bouncing up a little onto the balls of his feet before making himself settle; he likes talking about this sort of thing.]
I love making dresses, and fancy shirts with lots of ruffles... Skirts that sway in the wind and fan out when the wearer twirls around. I'm particularly skilled with embroidery as well, I often make patches for those in the army to wear for luck if they can't wear a full outfit.
I want my clothing to make people happy when they wear it. That's the most important thing to me.
[ Essek could tell that Forrest took much pride in his work and his craft, it exuded from the other man in waves that was infectous.
Granted, Essek had always made alterations to his clothing as he had always been of the firm opinion that no one could make things exactly right for himself like he could; and it was that unfailing critical eye that had him fixing a hem when needed or sewing in pockets to his traveling cloaks to better store his components; those little touches. And those same touches had led him to fashioning pieces just for himself especially since he did not want to wear something that could be easily gained by anyone and everyone. (the Den Modiste had not been exclusive with their fashions and he'd shown up many a time wearing something that his Mother had been wearing).
And that was perhaps what he enjoyed and why he enjoyed-- to be able to provide people with something that was exclusively theirs. ]
Well, it sounds that you are doing it for all the right reasons, and that is to be commended.
[ He steps through the doorway then and is immediately beset by the smell of parchment and ink, a comfortable smell. He would be sure to pick up something for Caleb-- a gift as he did enjoy spoiling his boyfriend. A nice quill pen, a notebook or a bookmark. ]
Now, the first thing to do is to find a rather large book with which you will store your images inside of them, would those colours you listed be colours you'd want for the binding of a book? Seafoam or pink?
[ That was when Essek provided his own book, a large study of worked dark purple leather and with silver stitching running through it; the notebook was recent since the stationary shop had opened, uponn opening the book up, there were glossy pictures that had been captured of various adventuring clothing that he had designed, some items that he wore himself, other such things that he'd gotten both Pike and Keyleth to model for himself. ]
Much like with any book such as this, personal touches are encouraged-- it lets whoever is thumbing through your designs, that this is inherently your work.
[Forrest hasn't spent much time in this particular shop, if he's honest; writing and reading have never really interested him, and while he can acknowledge the beauty and the utility of the goods within, he's never had a lot of personal use for them. He finds himself momentarily distracted by the wares (would Hina like any of this, he wonders before promptly dismissing the thought) before his attention is drawn to the book Essek pulls out to show him.
The contents are fascinating, and he looks raptly through it before returning his attention to the shelves; personal touches, huh...]
Pink and white, I think... That's what I associate most strongly with myself, so that's what I want.
[He looks the books over, eventually settling on one he likes - pale pink with puffy binding that would lend itself well to designs being embroidered into it, should someone be determined enough to try; it's thick but it's not too heavy to be carried, and honestly, holding it feels similar to how holding Brynhildr the one time he'd done so had felt. He takes that latter part as a sign, and decides that this is the one he's going to buy.]
[ As a wizard, Essek's entire hubris could be found in a shop of which there is a ready access of paper and ink, so he is temporarily distracted by a bookmark with a cat on it; he picks it up and turns it around in his hand before he decides to buy it for Caleb (yes, his boyfriend was going to become that person who gets cat themed everything as presents) though he does glance up once Forrest speaks and sees the book that he is holding.
A smile, it appears that is the perfect book; often times it was the book who picked the person and not the other way around. ]
I think that suits your aesthetic, and it will look very good with all your designs in it, and I really like the material. It's something professional that you can present to people, but now you need a special pen to label your designs and the photographs that you take.
[ It was a simple matter to steer Forrest over to the pen counter; there were many quills that were beautifully appointed with feathers and which of course drew Essek however, there was also a few very cute gel pens in a plethora of rainbow colours, from sea foam green to dark sparkly purple. And a little pad with which to write with them, to try them out. ]
I am rather impressed at the selection and I am trying not to buy everything, if I'm being honest.
[It's said as he comes over, joining Essek near the writing supplies; he knows he should go for something dignified, or at least that's how his father would want him to treat something so important, but he'd be lying if he said the sparkly gel pens weren't calling to him. He picks up the purple one to try out and... Oh, that's delightful.]
I admit that I don't tend to do much writing if left up to my own devices; perhaps I ought to come in here more often, though, if this is the sort of thing they have in here.
[He twirls that purple one idly for a moment, considering it, before picking out a shiny gold one and trying it out as well, doodling little accenting marks around the purple letters to see how it contrasts.]
...I think I like these. This way I have both the colors I like and the colors of my country to accent it.
[He's vibrating a little, to be honest.]
This is rather exciting. Thank you for taking me here.
[ He picks up a quill pen and twirls it around in his fingers as he studies it, the slender arrow of it and the way that it is dyed a bright and vibrant orange, with a little red center held within the feather-- it reminded him of a flame. ] As a Wizard, I have a love affair with books, papers and ink as that is how I maintain my spells.. it is why keeping a portfolio feels so natural.
[ Fashion was almost like a spell, the designs and threading much be precise, and weaving a spell was not unlike weaving a needle. ]
There is also a little stand that sells bubble tea-- my boyfriend and I came here the other day to shop and we were able to sample some; they have some unique flavors that I had never heard of before.
[ Honestly, he did not know what tutti-fruiti was and he was not sure he would enjoy it, he had defaulted to a lavender tea with chai bobba ] I know that Elias would appreciate that you are enjoying his shop so much, that is something that he strives to do-- provide a variety of things, even for people who would not normally come in here.
Do give Elias my regards, the next time you see him.
[And he does mean that sincerely, all of this is quite nice; he gathers up his supplies in his arms with the intent to keep them with him until he moves to pay. That said, he doesn't want to rush, either, enjoying taking his time just studying what's in front of him.]
I'm a mage myself, though I specialize in healing magic; I'm proficient in dark magic as well, though not as much so as my father is. I prefer the healing side of things moreso, but I know I'm going to inherit his legacy when he's gone, so it's important for me to be well-studied.
[Magic is moreso just a means to an end for him, though, as opposed to something he feels defines his entire life.]
I'll have to try the bubble tea... I've never had anything by that name, so I admit I'm curious now.
[ Healing and dark magic, that was certainly interesting combination but conversely a magic user who also enjoyed the fashion side of things? Well the similarities were there (just as was the differences, but he'd grown used to accomodating with differences due to his association with the Nein ]
It is always beneficial to choose a speciality, mine is Time and Gravity magic though I do know some other utility, ritual, and offensive spells.
[ And he was not going to lie, his favorite spells were always the utility ones, because by choice he was not a battle mage, though he could hold his own in a fight ]
If you ever wish to learn any new and different spells, Mage Hand is a cantrip that is very useful when you are sewing and you wish that you had more than two hands. [ Mage Hand was probably one of the reasons why he was able to get things done quickly, fabric cutting that he could task them to do while he did the more precise work. ]
[He says it quietly, as though trying to see if he likes how it sounds.]
I admit I've never heard of such a thing, but I would positively love to learn. It sounds like it could be quite helpful in making difficult projects, to say nothing of the increased productivity. If you genuinely wouldn't mind, I would like that.
[ If there was something that Essek like; it was teaching though not in the same way that Caleb Widogast did. Instead of taking on a classroom of talent, Essek preferred more to handpick the talent. He was watching the barista throw together the bubble tea that he had ordered, chai matcha with light bubbles and then he glanced over at Forrest and the earnest expression in those eyes moved him enough.
That he spoke the next thing. ]
I would be more than happy to teach you some basic cantrips, especially if you have the aptitude for magic, it would be something that you could utilize and there is a list of them that are rather handy. [ He rather selfishly used 'prestidigitate' to fix his hair in the morning, since Dynasty customs dictate that no one (except for those intimate with him) touch his hair except his.
And you could be sure that every curl on his hair was perfectly in place at all times (mostly) ]
As far as offensive magic goes, do you have a particular element you default toward?
[Forrest is getting a peach tea for himself; it sounds straightforward, sweet enough for his liking without being overwhelming, and honestly he's looking forward to trying it. He looks over at the question, though, seemingly caught a little off-guard.]
Oh... Nohrian dark magic is a skill element unto itself. I can use things like wood and lightning in that sort of way, but it's all considered dark magic... As long as I have a tome to learn from I can pick up almost anything.
Ah, then you are much like a wizard then, that will make you learning the cantrips much easier due to your aptitude and familiarity with books. [ He was already teaching Blake, and had plans to teach Eilowny however he was not against teaching others if they should prove to be good students; but unlike Caleb who would be suited to an entire schoolroom of students, he was a little more exclusive then that, choosing a few pupils at a time ] We shall have to set up something then, it will be enjoyable to teach you and Mage Hand is very useful for cutting fabric.
[ Essek would come away from this thinking that Forrest's manners were exceptional and very gracious. He definitely appreciated that in friends-- it was why he got along so well with Blake and Eilowny, they were near kindred and he had a feeling that Forrest would be the same way; he looked forward to get to know the young man further and see how he managed to challenge himself.
Because he saw in the guy a passionate nature to do well, as well as ambition. ]
Everything in it's time, I am teaching both Blake and Eilowny come cantrips as well, so it would be my pleasure to add you to my pupil list-- my boyfriend, he is also a wizard however I think that he may choose to teach magic on a grander scale, that is his passion.. teaching, though I do take on people I find promising.
[ If Essek chose an individual to teach, it is usually that he did see talent there, he would not expend his energy otherwise ]
I see... I'm mostly self-taught, which is why I chose to focus on healing. My father may decide to teach me more regarding dark magic in the future - I'm set to inherit a rather important artifact of his, and I would like to know that I'll have full control over it before that time comes - but my relationship with him is...difficult, so I don't feel I can rely solely on him to further my studies.
[It's said rather straightforwardly, and not as though he's trying to spread gossip or the like; he's simply stating fact.]
[ The server at the counter passed them their drinks and Essek took a sip of bubble tea which was in essence not as elegant as it could appear-- the very act of sucking up bubbles was not, especially when he made an inarticulate eep as it was a surprise (i.e he did not know his own strength) however he quickly recovered. ]
I would be more than happy to fill any holes in your education; while healing powers are important, even healers must have need of some offensive capabilities, and Time and Gravity magic is fairly close to dark aspected magic.. [ Voids were consuming darkness, gravity was but a delicate grey area between light and darkness and what the world itself balanced upon ]
[Forrest just takes a moment to look the drink over, turning it around in his hands; it's pleasantly cold, and drinking it is likewise a pleasant experience - there's no real way to be dignified as he does so, but that's a problem he can think about at another time because this whole experience is delightful.]
I do intend to have some sort of offensive magic, but if you can teach me dark magic that my father doesn't - oh! there are little pearls in here, how lovely - sorry, that even my father is unfamiliar with, then I certainly won't say no. I'm not familiar with either Time or Gravity as a magical essence in quite the way you've referred to them, so I'm interested, surely.
Best to be careful with the pearls, they can catch you by surprise the first time.
[ And certainly Jimothy was preening, as the Kookaburra was wont to do when he was manning his shop and he saw many people coming in and enjoying himself, that earned Essek removing a pretty piece of ribbon from his pocket which Jimothy immediately pecked up to stash away. ]
You know, Jimothy is very much a fashionista too-- he is having me make him a coat, perhaps he would like something from you as well?
[ A nod in acquiescence to the magic, that would be arranged; he would arrange for an afternoon of magic, and maybe a little bit of fashion interspersed as well, the plans would make themselves, and closer to that point in time, Essek would tender the invitation. ]
Well, if he's receptive, I surely won't argue with taking him on as a client. In fact, I would rather enjoy the challenge that would come with such a thing.
It is the challenges that assist us in striving to be better in our craft, and I will let you talk with him at a later time frame so that you may ascertain his core aesthetic.
[ Essek took a sip of his matcha boba tea while offering Forrest a smile. ] I admit it was a nice outing out, and it was a pleasure to get to know you a little bit better, Forrest.
[ He lowers from his float to his five foot five frame; being rather short for a drow man, though he was short for any race really save for a halfling or a dwarf. ]
[Forrest is like an entire 5'6" and not used to being the taller person in an interaction; that's fine, though, god knows Elise is small and she could probably beat him in any manner of duels, so...]
It's been quite the pleasure indeed. Thank you so much for meeting with me, and for making arrangements as we have.
[ Despite his size, he was still formidable-- it was the aura that surrounded him; a no-nonsense aura. It was especially noticeable when he was anywhere within the vicinity of Caleb Widogast in which there would be no doubt at all who called the shots, and with Caleb being considerably taller.
Size mattered not in any interaction. ]
I hope that if you make anything, you show me.. as well as keep me abreast of your work on your portfolio, I am very interested in how you make something like that yours.
[ A smile and an incline of his head. ] I get a bit lonely sometimes, and I am only now comfortable enough where I may admit that, so company even if you come over and we work on sewing, I think that I would like that.
[He seems to realize after the fact that that was possibly a little much, but he doesn't seem inclined to apologize for it, either.]
I've... Due to the way I was raised, I've only frequently started having friends. It was a rather isolated, lonely existence, so any way I can help with such things in others I gladly will.
I think we are very close to wrapping this up if you agree!
[ And thus did the isolationist boys become friends, and it would be a glorious and absolutely heartening friendship, made up of fashion and quiet moments ] I think that it is something then that we both share, yes.
